Tell us about yourself.
Hi! I’m a designer based in south of Spain and I am in love with colors and patterns as well as addicted to pattern designs.
When I was a child, I was always curious and adventurous, exploring the things around me, learning new things, getting in involved in theatre, crafts - everything that could boots my imagination! I also loved reading and traveling so I think what I am doing now is definitely good for me. This is how I’ve visioned my life to be - that is to bring joy and happiness to the people around me, which in turn, makes me happy too.
Tell us more about your art and what inspired you to pursue it?
I did not go to art school or have any formal art training. I first started out with a 10-month long photography course because I wanted to express myself in a visual way. Somehow, I switched from photography to design and I fell in love with patterns on the way. As I’m a self-taught designer, I’m always trying to learn new things and improve my technique. For me, the most important thing is to being passionate about what I do.
How did this collaboration with May28th come about?
Well, last year I was contacted by Fab Europe to do some designs for a special watch event on Fab that fell on May 28th. Fab had 28 designs by various designers turned into watches by May28th and I automatically fell in love with the watches. Since that sale, I was wondering how to design more May28th watches, so I contacted the company and happily they accepted me as their collaboration artist.
What are your future plans?
I hope to be to keep doing what I love the most : designing patterns! I love seeing my designs and patterns on products plus, I´m working on a few more collabs right now and can´t wait to see my products come to life. You can see some of my past and present works on my site : www.nikamartinez.com
Crazy how quickly a week flies by and it’s Wednesday again! Time for #watchwednesday where we share stories behind our watch designs!
For this week, we would like to share how this design of our 02:19PM came about. Inspired by the 3D geometric patterns and colors, what you get is various “cubes” that pop out when you shift your focus on the different colors. We also designed this with sleek matte black bands, so the color contrast really comes through :)
